It begins when a customer
Passes through those doors.
When they enters your domain, You bare your teeth And spit out a “Welcome.”
When they ask for your help, You roll your eyes, And direct their attention to the signs above, Disgusted by their incompetence.
When they meet you at the cash register, You boredly scan their items, And mechanically drone out their total, Drumming your fingers impatiently As they fumble with their wallet.
When at last, they manage to hand you their money,

Clear, wet, slightly warm.
No different from the plethora that descends from the heavens, carrying the name of rain.
No different from the infinite droplets that merge to form the vast expanse of ocean.
Each morning, they cling to blades of verdant grass, to eyelashes and soft blossoms.
Every day, I pass them by without a second thought.
